Origami Planet instructions and tutorial

Learn how to make a simple and easy origami planet with rings. This origami ringed planet looks like Saturn. It has a fun and retro look, straight from old sci-fi comics and books!

This origami Saturn planet will be a perfect companion for the easy origami space rocket model.

To fold this origami planet, you need a square piece of paper with 2 different colors. If you use kami paper with a colored side and a white side, you can make a colored planet with white rings, or a white planet with colored rings.

In the video I use a 15x15 cm piece of paper, but you can use other sizes, including smaller sizes, as this origami model does not have a lot of folds.

Important note: this origami planet is an original origami model created by Stéphane Gigandet protected by copyright law. Do not publish videos, instructions, diagrams, tutorials etc. that show how to fold this origami planet, and instead link to this video or embed it. Thank you!

How to make an origami Planet

Here are the step-by-step instructions to fold a Planet (photo diagram and/or video).

Planet - step 1

1. Start with a square piece of paper with 2 colors. If you want your planet to look more round, you can cut a vertical stripe on the left (at most 1/8th of the width). But the planet looks very good folded from a square as well. Note: the video shows a new version that does not requiring cutting the paper.

Planet - step 2

2. Start with the white side on top if you want white rings on a colored planet.

Planet - step 3

3. Fold the top of the square to the bottom.

Planet - step 4

4. Unfold.

Planet - step 5

5. Fold the top of the square to the middle crease.

Planet - step 6

6. Unfold.

Planet - step 7

7. Fold the top of the square to the previous crease.

Planet - step 8

8. Fold back the bottom of the colored flap to the top of the model.

Planet - step 9

9. Revert the fold to put the flap under the model.

Planet - step 10

10. Fold again the top part of the model down (no new fold is created, fold at the existing fold).

Planet - step 11

11. Fold the bottom of the square up to the bottom of the white flap.

Planet - step 12

12. Turn the model to the other side.

Planet - step 13

13. Fold the first layer of the bottom left corner all the way to the top of the model. (You might have to turn the model 180° depending on how you turned the model over at the previous step).

Planet - step 14

14. Fold the top horizontal edge of the corner to the right vertical edge. Don't fold all the way, fold until you reach the bottom of the ring which is under.

Planet - step 15

15. Flatten the fold. This will create two new folds inside.

Planet - step 16

16. Fold back the tip at the very left.

Planet - step 17

17. Repeat the steps on the other side.

Planet - step 18

18. Turn the model over. Your origami planet is complete!

Planet - step 19

19. If you want a rounder planet, the only difference is that you need to cut a small vertical stripe before folding the model.

Planet - step 20

20. The video shows an improved version of my origami planet model, which is round and does not require cutting the paper before folding.
